The Hennessy Hammock Explorer Duluxe A-Sym is a mid-weight durable camping hammock, I’ve had mine for just over a year and use it regularly as an alternative to using a tent.
Coming in at 1.4kg or 3lbs 2oz it could be considered slightly heavy for the normal backpacker but please bare in mind that this is the mid-sized hammock and as such is a little heavier. Hennessy Hammock also offer a number of lightweight hammocks geared at the weight concious backpacker, their range can be found on their website here: hennessyhammock.com
The build quality of the hammock is 2nd to none, I feel it will probably out live me. Hennessy have put a lot of thought into this hammock and the little touches go a long way. I personally opted for the Velcro fastening version due to the simplicity of it but there is also a zip fastening version which by all accounts is equally as good.
The hammock comes complete with some tree-huggers (like mini-seatbelt straps) to help protect the tree when setting up, also comes with a tarpaulin to protect against wind and rain, the hammock itself, some pegs and a little instruction manual, all packed up neatly into a compact rip-stop stuff sack.
Depending on what model you opt for you may also get included a waterproof/rip-stop tarpaulin which offers shade and protects from rain and to some degree wind. This can be easily detached in a matter of seconds if you do not wish to use it (ie, for looking up at the stars at night), you can also peg it down on only one site if you want to use the hammock as a chair for any reason. Some photos below showing the multiple set-up options of the hammock.
If there were any additions I would advise you purchase along with the hammock is the ‘snake-skins‘ which help to easily pack up the hammock after use and make re-assembly very quick and easy.
The inside is also very spacious in this oversized model allowing for people up to 7ft and weighing up to 300lbs /136kg, I’m only 5ft 10″ and have huge amounts of room within the hammock, enough for a 100ltr bag some nights!
Along the top of the hammock you’ll find a slide-along, 3 compartment pouch with is very handy to store food, phone, camera etc in a great feature. There are also a number of small black clips you can hang things on if you please. Entrance to the hammock is made from the bottom and as soon as you’re inside, a diagonal sleeping position will give you most comfort for the night.
I’ve camped out in all weathers before and coupled with a good warm sleeping bag you can use this in any season, even in the snow!
There are many benefits from using a hammock than a tent which I’ll cover in another article, but needless to say they are fantastic! If you don’t believe me, you can check out the 25+ 5 star reviews on Amazon.com!
If you are interested in buying a hammock you can do so from the Hennessy Hammock website directly, they ship worldwide and do so in a speedy fashion.
