I represent the 50+ age group of travellers and travel writers on this site. After 30yrs in the Air Force and further years in big business I have twice jacked in highly paid jobs to travel extensively...read how I done so here. Alberobello, Trulli Houses, Italy – Gallery

A really special place, Alberobello, this is a town with sections of "Trulli Houses" which very much merit a walk around to see how the people of Puglia, Italy lived many years ago. These are still occupied in many instances.

Pietrapertosa, Italy – Gallery

Located in national park this is a beautiful village to visit high in the hills/mountains of southern Italy. One or two cafes and bars complement the views and general ambience of this place. You can walk up to the castle or take the "Flying Angel" 1.5 km zip wire to the village on the opposite side of the gorge....spectacular and we visited out of season so in season this would be superb.

Pheastos, Crete, Greece – Gallery

One of the key architectural sites in Crete and indeed in the greater Greece. There is an entrance fee but it is worth a visit...beware for the super smooth worn down paving on the way up to the ancient ruins...lethal!!

This part of Crete can be little explored with many tourist simply staying in the popular resorts. Remote and magical beaches abound and you have the popular Elouda area to take in. Some of the biggest and most expensive hotel complexes can be found here.

Lissos Gorge Walk, Crete, Greece

This interesting and attractive gorge has so much to offer. It’s almost secretive entrance gives you the feeling that you have stumbled upon a newly discovered treasure and in so many ways it matches these expectations. Unlike the more famous Samaria Gorge trek, this walk is less intensive but still very rewarding, with the bonus of historic, ancient ruins and a charming unspoiled cove to be discovered at the end of your trek.
